Accident – Death – Obituary News : Sheriff Calvin Hayden has sparked controversy this week after admitting that the search warrant he claimed to have “on hand” for old county election ballots was not signed by a judge, rendering it invalid. The revelation came during a heated exchange with former Kansas Republican Chairman Mike Kuckelman at a candidates forum hosted by the Olathe Community Center on Monday evening.

Kuckelman, who posted a video clip of the incident on his Facebook page, described the atmosphere in the room as tense, with 50 to 75 people in attendance submitting questions on index cards to be read by a moderator to the candidates. Hayden’s outburst occurred during a break in the forum, following a question related to the Giglio lists, which identify law enforcement officers with credibility issues in court.

In the video, Hayden can be seen waving papers at Kuckelman, challenging him to read the documents. When questioned about the validity of the search warrant, Hayden responded, “I didn’t say it was valid.” This admission raised further questions about the sheriff’s handling of the investigation into election integrity issues, which he claimed to be pursuing based on concerns raised by residents.

The controversy surrounding Hayden’s actions has been ongoing, with his investigation yielding no concrete results thus far. Despite claims of suspicious election procedures, only one allegation of voter intimidation was forwarded to prosecutors, but District Attorney Steve Howe deemed the evidence insufficient to pursue charges. Hayden’s assertion that he had a search warrant in hand to prevent the destruction of ballots from previous years has also come under scrutiny, as neither Howe nor election officials were aware of any such warrant.

In response to Hayden’s behaviour, Kuckelman has called for the sheriff to be reported to the Kansas Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (CPOST) and the Johnson County Professional Standards Unit. In a letter to current Undersheriff Daryl Reece, Kuckelman expressed concern over Hayden’s unethical behaviour and urged action to address the sheriff’s deception and its impact on public trust in the department.

The unfolding saga between Hayden and Kuckelman underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in law enforcement. As the controversy continues to unfold, the public will be watching closely to see how authorities respond to the allegations against Sheriff Calvin Hayden..
