Accident – Death – Obituary News : A cruise ship staff member hailing from South Africa has been apprehended in the capital city of Alaska for allegedly assaulting a woman and two security officers with scissors whilst on board the vessel, as per authorities.

The U.S. attorney’s office has revealed that the accused, 35-year-old Ntando Sogoni, is facing charges of assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction. No legal representation for Sogoni is indicated in online court records.

FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy’s affidavit discloses that Sogoni was recently employed by a cruise company and joined the Norwegian Encore ship in Seattle on Sunday. The vessel embarked on a week-long voyage with planned stops in Alaskan ports, including Juneau, and British Columbia.

The purported incident occurred west of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, as the ship was en route to Alaska. Ship personnel observed Sogoni attempting to deploy a lifeboat late on Sunday evening, leading to his escort by security to a medical facility for evaluation.

Whilst at the medical center, Sogoni reportedly exhibited irrational behaviour and attempted to abscond. He then physically assaulted a guard and a nurse before seizing a pair of scissors from a nearby room and stabbing a woman under examination, along with two intervening guards, before being subdued and detained in a shipboard holding facility. Fortunately, none of the injuries were deemed life-threatening.

The Norwegian Encore docked in Juneau on Tuesday, where Sogoni was taken into custody by the FBI. If found guilty, Sogoni could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each charge, with the ultimate decision resting with a federal district court judge..
