Accident – Death – Obituary News : Police in Coffs Harbour are currently investigating the tragic stabbing death of 21-year-old Kye Schaefer. In a recent development, authorities have charged a 36-year-old man with the armed robbery of a motorist near the location where Schaefer was found fatally wounded.

The armed robbery incident reportedly took place at approximately the same time and just a hundred metres away from where Schaefer was discovered with multiple stab wounds around 6:40 am last Thursday. According to court documents obtained by The Coffs Coast Advocate, the accused man allegedly threatened another individual with a metal star picket in a car park near the Coffs Harbour Jetty. Both the accused and the victim were reportedly sleeping rough in the area at the time.

Following the alleged armed robbery, the 36-year-old is said to have stolen a fishing rod, reel, and two six-packs of beer from another homeless individual shortly after. Later that day, he was apprehended by authorities after allegedly stealing a $4000 e-bike from a nearby shopping centre.

The man has been charged with robbery while armed with an offensive weapon and larceny as part of the ongoing investigation by Strike Force Kooringaroo, established to look into Schaefer’s murder. He appeared in Coffs Harbour Local Court the following day, where he did not enter any pleas in relation to the charges and did not apply for release. Bail was formally refused, and he is scheduled to reappear in court on June 25.

It is crucial to note that the 36-year-old is not connected to Schaefer’s death in any way. The homicide investigation into the young surfer’s tragic passing continues, with detectives urging the public to come forward with any information regarding a man seen riding a bicycle in the vicinity at the time of the incident.

Additionally, authorities are appealing for witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage from the area around the Coffs Harbour Surf Club and Orlando Street during the incident. Emergency services responded to Ocean Parade in Coffs Harbour following reports of a stabbing at 6:40 am on May 2, where Schaefer was treated by paramedics before succumbing to his injuries at Coffs Harbour Base Hospital.

The family of the late Kye Schaefer has been left devastated by the loss, calling for stricter legislation to combat knife-related violence. Describing Schaefer as having a mischievous yet caring nature, his loved ones are heartbroken by the senseless tragedy. Expressing frustration with the lack of stringent laws addressing knife-related attacks in New South Wales, they implore lawmakers to take action to prevent such incidents in the future.

One example cited is Queensland’s implementation of Jack’s Law, named after 17-year-old Jack Beasley, who tragically lost his life in a stabbing incident in 2019. The legislation grants police the authority to conduct searches in entertainment precincts and public transport areas to prevent such violent acts from occurring..
