The All Women Police in Koyambedu have apprehended a 38-year-old man for allegedly breaking into the residence of a school teacher and sexually assaulting her at knifepoint in Nerkundram.
The victim, a 31-year-old woman who resides with her husband, an auto-driver, and their two daughters in Nerkundram, was at home alone on Monday night as her husband was out working. Due to the heat, she had left the door open, creating an opportunity for the perpetrator.
In the dead of night, the assailant, who appeared to be intoxicated, entered the house while the woman and her children were asleep. When the woman attempted to raise an alarm, he threatened her with a knife and proceeded to commit the heinous act.
Upon hearing the woman’s cries for help, neighbours rushed to her aid and managed to subdue the attacker, inflicting injuries in the process. Police arrived at the scene and promptly escorted both the woman and the suspect, who sustained injuries, to the hospital. Subsequent medical examinations confirmed the sexual assault.
Following a formal complaint lodged by the victim, the police took the suspect, identified as J. Paul Raj, a resident of Chinmaya Nagar, into custody on charges of rape and criminal intimidation.
