In a recent court ruling in Fayetteville, WV, 34-year-old Galen A. Steele, hailing from Toledo, Ohio, was handed a seven-year prison sentence for his involvement in a felony drug offense. The charge brought against Steele was conspiracy to violate the Uniform Controlled Substances Act.
Sentencing Details
On the 7th of May, 2024, Steele received his sentence, which mandates him to serve a minimum of one year and nine months behind bars before becoming eligible for parole. This penalty stemmed from his guilty plea entered on March 18, 2024.
Traffic Stop and Discovery
The chain of events leading to Steele’s conviction traces back to a routine traffic stop conducted by a Fayetteville Police Department officer on May 7, 2021. The officer pulled over a vehicle heading north on Route 19 in Fayetteville due to erratic driving behaviour and speeding. Steele was identified as the driver, with Ashley McCree as his passenger.
Upon detecting the scent of marijuana emanating from the vehicle, the officer proceeded to conduct a search, uncovering a stash of illegal substances. Hidden in a drink mix container and cooler within the car were marijuana, suspected heroin/fentanyl, pills, and cocaine, alongside a sum exceeding $4,000 in cash.
Substance Testing Results
Subsequent laboratory tests confirmed the presence of over 19 grams of a fentanyl and heroin mixture within the vehicle occupied by Steele and McCree. Additionally, Steele was found to be in possession of crack cocaine and methamphetamine-laden pills.
Legal Proceedings
Steele’s legal entanglements extended beyond this case, as he had previously been apprehended in Ohio in March 2022 on unrelated charges. Following extradition to West Virginia in February 2024, he faced pending charges related to the aforementioned drug offence.
