Accident – Death – Obituary News :

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — After nearly 50 years, skeletal remains found in Middle Tennessee have been identified through DNA testing as those of Annie Carolyn Jenkins, a missing Memphis woman last seen in 1974.

The breakthrough came when volunteers from the DNA Doe Project made contact with a relative of Jenkins, according to the Maury County Sheriff’s Office.

Composite sketches provided by the Maury County Sheriff’s Office show what Annie Carolyn Jenkins may have looked like before she disappeared in 1974.

Jenkins, aged 19, had been visiting relatives in Chicago in the fall of 1974 before boarding a flight to Tennessee. This marked the last known contact with her family, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office.

The remains of Annie Carolyn Jenkins were discovered near Interstate 65 in Maury County in February 1975, a location about four hours’ drive east of Memphis, south of Nashville.

Although Jenkins was never officially reported missing, her family never ceased their search for her, a relative informed authorities.

Since 1975, Jenkins’ remains had been stored at the University of Tennessee Department of Anthropology.

The case has undergone multiple investigations and DNA sampling over the years, with retired Maury County Lt. Jerry Williams reigniting the investigation in 2012.

The Maury County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the case remains an open homicide investigation.
