In a breakthrough discovery, the Maury County Sheriff’s Department has identified the remains of a woman found nearly 50 years ago. The remains were discovered on Feb. 4, 1975, by two hunters on Joe Brown Road near Interstate 65 in Maury County, Tennessee. At the time, it was determined that the remains belonged to a Black woman aged between 17 and 21.
For decades, the unidentified woman’s remains were stored at the University of Tennessee. Thanks to advances in DNA technology, the woman has now been identified as 19-year-old Annie Carolyn Jenkins, originally from Memphis. Jenkins had been visiting relatives in Chicago before boarding a flight to Tennessee in the fall of 1974. Tragically, this was the last known contact her family had with her.
After 49 years of searching, Jenkins’ family will finally be able to lay her to rest as her remains are returned to them. The investigation into her death is still ongoing, with authorities determined to bring justice for Annie Carolyn Jenkins.
Sheriff Bucky Rowland expressed his gratitude to Detective Keith Wrather, Lt. Jerry Williams (retired), Gina Wrather, Genetic Genealogist, and all those who have tirelessly worked on this case since 1975. Special thanks were also given to the DNA Doe Project, their dedicated volunteers, and donors whose contributions made this identification possible.
The identification of Annie Carolyn Jenkins brings closure to a decades-old mystery, shedding light on a tragic chapter in Maury County’s history. The sheriff’s department remains committed to pursuing justice for Jenkins and ensuring that her story is not forgotten.
