Accident – Death – Obituary News :

NEW YORK (AP) — A cruise ship made its way into a New York City port with a 44-foot (13-meter) dead whale sprawled across its bow, marine authorities have confirmed.

The deceased whale, identified as an endangered sei whale, was discovered entangled on the ship’s bow as it arrived at the Port of Brooklyn over the weekend, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries spokesperson Andrea Gomez.

MSC Cruises, a Geneva-based cruise line, has acknowledged that the dead whale was found on their vessel, the MSC Meraviglia. The ship had docked at Brooklyn before heading to ports in New England and Canada.

Following the grim discovery, MSC Cruises promptly informed the necessary authorities, who are currently in the process of examining the deceased whale, as stated in a press release from the cruise line.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life,” the officials expressed in the statement, emphasising their commitment to adhering to regulations aimed at safeguarding whales. They mentioned that they take proactive measures, such as altering itineraries in specific regions to avoid potential collisions with marine animals.

The lifeless whale was later transported to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and towed ashore for a necropsy to be conducted, allowing for a more thorough examination of the carcass and retrieval of samples, Gomez revealed.

On Tuesday, the necropsy, which is the animal equivalent of an autopsy, was performed on the whale. The samples gathered from the whale will assist biologists in determining whether the whale was deceased prior to being struck by the ship, Gomez added.

Sei whales are commonly sighted in deep waters far from the coastline, Gomez explained. This particular species is among the largest whales globally and is internationally protected under conservation regulations.
