A second individual has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the tragic death of a 70-year-old man in Edmonton. The incident occurred on New Year’s Day last January, with the victim’s remains being discovered in his Edmonton residence later in the year.

Authorities were alerted to the situation at a residence near 107th Avenue and 106th Street on January 1, 2023, following reports of a sudden death. The deceased individual, identified as Ronald Bell, was determined to be 70 years old based on an autopsy.

Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement officers discovered the deceased male. After conducting an investigation into the cause of death, the Edmonton Medical Examiner concluded that the death could be classified as a homicide. The specific cause of death was not disclosed by Edmonton police for investigative purposes, as revealed in an update provided on May 6.

During the initial investigation last year, Detective Jared Buhler of the Edmonton Police noted clear indications of a struggle at the scene of the homicide. It is believed that Bell met his demise several days prior to the discovery of his body. Upon entering the home, officers also found evidence of an active water leak and a fire that had been extinguished.

Donn Austin Gauthier was apprehended on July 11, 2023, and subsequently charged with first-degree murder, arson, indignity to a body, and breaching recognizance in connection to the death of Ronald Bell.

More recently, on May 2, 2024, Melissa Norris was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder, arson, and indignity to a body in relation to the tragic incident involving Bell’s death.
