Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office has identified a suspect in a shooting incident that took place in the Town of Viroqua, Wisconsin. The incident occurred on May 6, 2024, at a residence on West Smith Road in rural Viroqua -Westby.

Authorities were alerted to an altercation at the home around 11:15 a.m. It was reported that during the altercation, a firearm was discharged. Upon arrival, officers found that the victim was safe at a different location.

The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Nakeil Bettis, was spotted fleeing into a nearby cornfield. He was apprehended by law enforcement at approximately 11:30 a.m. A handgun and evidence of a firearm discharge were recovered at the scene.

Legal Proceedings

Following his arrest, Nakeil Bettis appeared in Vernon County Circuit Court on May 7, 2024, for a Bail Hearing. A bond of $1,000.00 cash was set, which Bettis later paid, resulting in his release.

Formal charges are currently being pursued by the Vernon County District Attorney’s office. Bettis is scheduled to appear in court again on May 8, 2024, as the legal process unfolds.
