TOWN OF VIROQUA, Wis. (WEAU) – Authorities have identified a suspect in connection with a shooting that took place in Vernon County, Wisconsin.

The incident occurred on May 6, 2024, at around 11:15 a.m. when authorities received a report of a fight at a residence on West Smith Road in rural Viroqua -Westby, WI, in the Town of Viroqua.

During the altercation, a firearm was discharged, prompting a swift response from law enforcement officers.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers determined that the victim had fled to safety, while the suspect, identified as 44-year-old Nakeil Bettis, was observed running into a nearby cornfield. Bettis was apprehended at approximately 11:30 a.m.

A subsequent search of the area uncovered evidence of gunshots and a pistol believed to have been used in the incident.

Bettis made an appearance in Vernon County District Court on May 7, 2024, for a bail hearing. Bail was set at $1,000.00 in cash, which was promptly paid, leading to Bettis’ release.

The Vernon County District Attorney is currently exploring the possibility of filing formal charges against Bettis in connection with the shooting.

Bettis is scheduled to make a return appearance in court on May 8, 2024, as the investigation into the incident continues.
