The deceased individual, identified as 56-year-old Derek Polite from North Braddock, was found shot to death in the home. Derek is a relative of the suspect, 26-year-old Bernard Polite, as confirmed by court documents released by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office on Monday morning.
The unsettling incident took place at Jesus’ Dwelling Place Church on Lobringer Avenue, where Bernard Polite reportedly attempted to shoot Pastor Glenn Germany during a service. Fortunately, the gun malfunctioned, preventing any harm to the pastor.

Pastor Germany expressed his gratitude for surviving the attack, stating, “I’m thankful to God that I’m still here because he definitely pulled the trigger.” Germany recounted the moment when Bernard Polite aimed the gun directly at him, prompting him to seek cover.
According to Germany’s account to Pittsburgh’s Action News 4, he had never encountered the gunman before the incident. Bernard had been seen frequenting the church, making eye contact with the pastor prior to the attempted shooting.
Witnesses at the church swiftly intervened as Germany sought shelter. One courageous individual managed to disarm Bernard, preventing further escalation of the situation.
Confession and Tragic Discovery
Following the failed attack on Pastor Germany, Bernard reportedly confessed to authorities that he felt compelled by divine instruction to commit the act. He expressed a desire to be incarcerated to clear his conscience.
Later that evening, a tragic discovery unfolded at Bernard’s residence on Stokes Avenue. The lifeless body of Derek Polite was found inside, having suffered fatal gunshot wounds.

Despite the distressing developments, no charges have been filed in connection with Derek Polite’s death, with Allegheny County police conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
