A teenager from San Bernardino has been identified as the home invasion suspect who was fatally shot by police in Long Beach, officials revealed on Monday.

The incident took place on the evening of Apr. 26 on the 6800 block of Cerritos Avenue. The suspect, armed with a replica firearm, broke into a home where he attempted to rob a teenager and two adults. Long Beach police were called to the scene to respond to the home invasion.

Upon their arrival, the officers successfully managed to get the victims out of the home safely. They then proceeded to engage in an hour-long verbal de-escalation with the suspect, who was still in the victim’s yard. Despite their efforts, the situation escalated and the suspect was shot by at least one officer. He was then taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Following protocol, the state Attorney General’s office is now conducting an investigation into the incident. This is required by law whenever police are involved in a fatal shooting of an unarmed civilian.

During their investigation, the police were able to identify an accomplice to the home invasion. The 18-year-old man from Modesto fled the scene before the officers arrived but was later apprehended on May 1 on suspicion of robbery.
