On Friday, Tampa Police apprehended 37-year-old Whitney Newsome in relation to a tragic shooting incident that resulted in the deaths of two individuals. The incident took place on May 3rd at around 10:30 am in the 900 block of E. 26th Ave.

Upon receiving a ShotSpotter notification followed by reports of gunfire, officers rushed to the scene to find two victims in critical condition. The victims were identified as an adult white female in her mid-20s and an adult black male in his early 40s, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Tragically, both victims succumbed to their injuries. A third victim, a black female in her early 40s, narrowly escaped being hit by gunfire and was later located and interviewed by authorities.

Following the incident, detectives immediately launched an investigation, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. It was determined that Newsome had been involved in a heated argument with the white female victim prior to the shooting. The black male victim attempted to intervene, resulting in a confrontation between the two men that escalated and moved down E. 26th Ave. The black female victim was also present in the area at the time, and it was later revealed that all parties involved were acquainted with each other.

Newsome, armed with a handgun, opened fire on the white female victim as she tried to flee, eventually collapsing in front of a nearby convenience store. The black male and black female victims also attempted to escape the gunfire, with the male victim being struck by a bullet. Fortunately, the black female victim managed to avoid being injured.

Subsequently, Newsome fled the scene, but officers were able to swiftly locate a handgun along the route of his escape. Through diligent investigative work and witness statements, detectives identified Newsome as the shooter. Over the weekend, Tampa Police Officers apprehended Newsome in the area of E. 25th Ave and N. 33rd St., bringing him into custody.

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw commended the dedication and efficiency displayed by the detectives and officers involved in the investigation. “Their relentless efforts, coupled with the support and cooperation of the community, enabled us to promptly apprehend a dangerous individual and provide closure to the families of the victims,” Chief Bercaw stated.

Newsome has been charged with two counts of Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He has been transported to Orient Road Jail to await further legal proceedings.
