A man from Riverview has been taken into custody following a road rage shooting incident that occurred on Sunday in Palmetto, Manatee County.
Suspect Identified and Charges Laid
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Department has revealed that 50-year-old Vincent Steele is facing charges of five counts of attempted murder after he allegedly discharged multiple rounds into a vehicle during a road rage altercation.
Details of the Incident
The incident unfolded as the occupants of a pick-up truck were travelling north on Business U.S. 41 where it merges with U.S. 41. At this point, the driver of a BMW sedan, later identified as Steele, attempted to overtake the victim’s truck in the merge lane. This manoeuvre resulted in contact between Steele’s rear bumper and the victim’s front bumper, causing Steele to lose control and veer off into the grassy shoulder in the 6900 block of US 41.
Following the collision, Steele exited his vehicle, approached the victim’s truck, and discharged seven rounds at the vehicle. A 36-year-old pregnant female passenger in the truck sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the lower torso. Fortunately, the unborn twins she was carrying were unharmed. The driver of the truck, aged 57, and a 9-year-old female passenger escaped without injury.
Victim’s Condition
The injured female passenger was promptly taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital by the driver of the truck. Subsequently, she was transferred to Tampa General Hospital for surgery. As of the latest update, both the mother and the unborn babies are reported to be in stable condition.
Arrest and Investigation
Vincent Steele remained at the scene and cooperated with deputies before being placed under arrest. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities working to piece together the events that led to the violent altercation.
