NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – A 65-year-old man tragically lost his life in a devastating crash on Sunday evening in Nelson County, as confirmed by Virginia State Police.

The incident occurred around 6:40 p.m. on Afton Mountain Road, where authorities received reports of a single-vehicle collision. The victim, identified as Phillip R. Pugh from Afton, Va., was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe eastbound when the vehicle veered off the right side of the road, ultimately plunging into a nearby ditch. The SUV then collided with a culvert and overturned, resulting in fatal consequences.

Tragically, Mr. Pugh was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Investigators have noted that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident, highlighting the importance of adhering to safety measures while on the road.
