Accident – Death – Obituary News :

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the remains of three individuals found near the Mexican fishing port of Ensenada have been identified as missing surfers from Australia and the U.S. who were victims of a heinous carjacking, authorities revealed on Sunday.

Family members were tasked with making the identifications in person at the request of Baja California state prosecutors, according to a statement from the state attorney general’s office obtained by NBC San Diego. The bodies were recovered from a remote well approximately 50 feet deep, officials confirmed.

Identified as Jake and Callum Robinson from Australia, and Jack Carter Rhoad from the U.S., the bodies were found in La Bocana, located south of Ensenada. It was revealed that at least two of the three individuals were residing in San Diego, as per NBC San Diego reports.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The Ensenada medical examiner’s office determined that the three victims had succumbed to gunshot wounds to the head. During a press conference on Sunday, prosecutors disclosed that the motive behind the crime was carjacking, with the perpetrators showing a particular interest in the wheels of the pickup truck used by the missing surfers.

The trio were reportedly at a makeshift encampment during a fishing and surfing expedition south of Ensenada, a region where the Baja coast transitions into remote territory, offering rare surfing opportunities. Prosecutors shared that they discovered the encampment, complete with tents, spent bullet casings, bloodstains, and signs indicating that bodies had been dragged.

Authorities indicated that three individuals were being interrogated in connection with the case. Of the three, a man and a woman were detained on methamphetamine-related charges, while the third person was the subject of a kidnapping warrant.

Seeking Justice for the Victims

Chief state prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez previously hinted at potential evidence linking the trio to the case, including a victim’s cellphone reportedly found in possession of one of the suspects. A fourth body was discovered alongside the three victims in the well, which authorities believe may be connected to a separate case.

Andrade Ramírez recently met with the parents of the three men, reassuring them of her commitment to ensuring that those responsible face the full extent of the law. The tragic incident unfolded on April 27 when the trio failed to return to an Airbnb rental in Rosarito, closer to the border, as noted by Debra Robinson, the mother of Jake and Callum Robinson.

Concerns Over Safety in Baja

While Baja California’s Pacific coast has long been a popular destination for surfers, the U.S. State Department has issued warnings urging Americans to exercise caution and avoid travel to the region due to the escalating violence attributed to drug cartels. Despite the allure of off-road adventures and campfire nights, the specter of cartel-related violence looms large in Baja tourism.
