Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Less than a month after an individual on New York’s “most wanted” list was apprehended in St. Peter’s Square with three knives before a papal audience, a parish priest from the Czech Republic was held on Sunday prior to the pontiff’s Angelus address after authorities discovered an air gun, two knives, a box cutter, and a screwdriver in his bag.

Reports suggest that the 59-year-old priest, known as Father Milan Palkovic, clad in a cassock, denied ownership of the items, claiming they belonged to another man attending the Angelus, who was also detained. He stated that the weapons were for “personal defense.”

The two men were part of a group of pilgrims from the Czech Republic who arrived in Rome by bus.

A police spokesperson mentioned that the confiscated items are now under investigation to ascertain the reason behind the two men attempting to bring them into the pope’s Angelus address. One theory suggests that the other man, aged 60, might have passed the bag to Palkovic, believing that his priestly attire would allow him to pass through undisturbed.

Consequently, the priest has been charged with illegal possession of weapons, an offence under Italian law which could result in a six-month prison sentence, potentially increased if the possession occurred at a public gathering.

The weapons were discovered during routine screening with metal detectors that visitors to St. Peter’s Square are obliged to pass through. The two men were detained at around 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning, three hours before Pope Francis appeared at the window of the papal apartment to deliver his blessing and message.

Initial background checks suggest that neither Palkovich nor the other man have prior criminal records.

In a separate incident, an Italian man was arrested with a replica pistol, capable of firing only blanks, outside Rome’s Basilica of St. Mary Major late Saturday night. The man was identified by witnesses who observed him shouting into a mobile phone, apparently during an argument with his fiancée, and then striking a wall with his fist.

The security breach on Sunday comes after an American man named Moises Tejada was detained by Italian police on April 10 in a bathroom just off St. Peter’s Square with three knives in his possession. Tejada, who was on New York State’s “most wanted” list for violating parole, had been released following a conviction for assaulting a real estate agent. He informed Italian authorities that he had travelled to Rome from Moldova after spending time in Ukraine fighting against the Russian invasion.

Tejada is currently in Italian custody awaiting an extradition request from the United States.

It remains unclear whether Tejada intended to use the knives to disrupt the audience or threaten the pontiff.
