The University of Georgia campus was rocked by tragedy when the body of a young woman was discovered on Thursday. The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Laken Hope Riley, a student at Augusta University College of Nursing in Athens.

Cause of Death

The official cause of death is pending an autopsy, according to Athens-Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson. Law enforcement sources have indicated that the victim, Riley, appeared to have been fatally bludgeoned, with visible injuries consistent with blunt force trauma.

Background

Riley, originally from Woodstock, was an undergraduate student at the University of Georgia until the spring of 2023. She then transitioned to AU’s nursing program, which holds classes on UGA’s Health Sciences Campus in Athens.

Discovery of the Body

UGA police were alerted to the situation after a concerned individual reported that their friend had not returned from a run at the UGA intramural fields. Approximately 20 minutes later, officers located Riley’s body in a wooded area behind Lake Herrick.

Investigation

UGA issued a statement to students confirming that the incident was being treated as a criminal matter. The university is collaborating with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Athens-Clarke County Police Department to conduct a thorough investigation.
