ATHENS, Georgia – Law enforcement officials are on the lookout for suspects following the tragic death of a nursing student whose body was discovered on the grounds of the University of Georgia on Thursday.

The student’s friend raised the alarm when she failed to return from her routine run near the University of Georgia Intramural Fields. Tragically, her lifeless body was later found in that vicinity.

University of Georgia Police Chief Jeffrey L. Clark disclosed on Thursday night, “The individual was unconscious, not breathing, and bore visible injuries.”

The deceased student’s identity has not been disclosed, but she has been confirmed as a nursing student at Augusta University. It is worth noting that both Augusta University and the University of Georgia have campuses in Athens.

“Foul play is suspected, and we are already receiving support from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Athens-Clarke County Police Department to investigate this crime,” UGA assured students in a letter.

Classes at UGA and Augusta University’s Athens campus were called off on Friday. However, Augusta University’s campus remains open as a safe location for students, faculty, and staff to gather.

Authorities are advising individuals to avoid the wooded area where the student was found and to travel in groups for safety. Chief Clark assured on Thursday that while there might be a potential risk due to the suspect being at large, there was no immediate threat to students and faculty.

“When you have a suspect that’s on the loose, there’s always a danger but there’s no immediate danger at this time,” Clark stated.

UGA authorities, along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Athens-Clarke County Police Department, are jointly leading the investigation. Chief Clark mentioned that there hasn’t been a homicide on campus in the past two decades.

As of Thursday night, the police have not identified any suspects in connection with the student’s tragic demise.
