Accident – Death – Obituary News : Rescuers successfully recovered the bodies of two men who were trapped under debris in an abandoned coal mine collapse in the Korba district of Chhattisgarh. The incident, which occurred in the Dipka area under the jurisdiction of the Hardi Bazar police station, also left a 17-year-old boy in a serious condition.

According to officials, the tragedy unfolded when five individuals unlawfully entered the abandoned open cast mine of the South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) to extract coal. Locals had been illegally digging through a section of the mine to steal coal, creating a tunnel that eventually collapsed, trapping the group.

Amit Saruta, the 17-year-old boy, managed to escape the collapse and helped rescue another individual, Laxman Markam, who sustained severe injuries. Despite immediate response from SECL, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and the police, three individuals remained trapped – Satrughan Kashyap, Pradip Kumar Kamro, and Laxman Odhe.

Tragically, Markam succumbed to his injuries while being transported to a local medical facility. Odhe was found in critical condition under the debris and rushed to the hospital for treatment. The rescue operation concluded with the recovery of the bodies of Kashyap and Kamro on Friday morning.

Mrityunjay Pandey, station house officer of the Hardi Bazar police station, expressed concern over Odhe’s critical condition. SECL’s public relations officer, Dr. Sanish Chandra, highlighted the closure of the mine for the past two years, emphasizing that it contained only coal seams within sedimentary rock formations.

Despite repeated warnings from SECL management against entering the abandoned mine, villagers continue to disregard the risks in pursuit of coal collection. Dr. Chandra described the incident as “very unfortunate,” underscoring the importance of adhering to safety protocols.

The community is left mourning the loss of lives in this preventable tragedy, as authorities urge heightened vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines in and around mining sites. The harrowing event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with illegal mining activities and the critical need for enhanced safety measures in such environments..
