FRISCO, TEXAS: Following the tragic incident where a 17-year-old girl, Ellyse Suarez, allegedly took her own life by drowning in a pond last year, an 18-year-old man in Texas has been apprehended and is facing felony charges for reportedly assisting in the suicide.

The individual in question, Zander Tashman, was arrested and charged with one count of aiding Ellyse Suarez in her death.

Chronicle of Events Surrounding Ellyse Suarez

On November 20, 2023, authorities were summoned to Frisco Commons Park in the 8000 block of McKinney Road in response to a report of “suspicious activity,” as indicated in a press release issued by the Frisco Police Department.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered the lifeless body of a 17-year-old female, later identified as Ellyse Suarez, in the pond. Tragically, Suarez was declared deceased at the scene, with the cause of death determined to be drowning.

“After an exhaustive investigation, evidence collected in the case indicated that 18-year-old Zander Tashman of Frisco assisted the deceased, his 17-year-old girlfriend, in committing suicide,” stated the police in the release.

Following the collection of evidence, detectives obtained a warrant for Tashman’s arrest, leading to his apprehension on February 18, 2024.

Facilitating the suicide of another individual is classified as a state jail felony, carrying a minimum sentence of six months and a maximum sentence of two years in a state correctional facility, alongside a potential fine of up to $10,000.

Authorities have refrained from disclosing further details regarding the investigation or elaborating on the evidence that led to Tashman’s arrest.

Mother of Ellyse Suarez Speaks Out About Zander Tashman

Expressing her sentiments, Azucena Massey, the mother of Ellyse Suarez, conveyed to NBCDFW her unease upon learning about Tashman’s involvement in her daughter’s tragic demise.

“It’s scary in a way because it makes me question, do I even want to know? Is it going to make me more angry? Because I don’t want to feel angry when I think about my daughter,” shared Massey, highlighting that Tashman and her daughter had an intermittent relationship throughout high school.

Detailing the significance of the relationship between her daughter and Tashman, Massey mentioned that it held great importance to Ellyse, wishing fervently for its success, a sentiment that may have influenced her daughter to make impulsive decisions.

She disclosed that Ellyse had been grappling with depression. Through their attorney, Reynie Tinajero, Tashman and his family issued a statement asserting the unjust nature of the arrest.

“Zander (Tashman) and his family wish this horrible tragedy had never taken place either. I’m sorry authorities made a poor and probably emotional choice to blame Zander (Tashman) and to do so in a public way,” the statement read.

“We’ll be making our case in a court of law. Zander (Tashman) is an exemplary college student with no prior history of criminal behavior. Zander is innocent,” the statement further conveyed.
