WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WVVA) – A fatal accident involving a pedestrian has left the community of Wythe County, Virginia, in mourning. The incident took place on Wednesday evening along Route 11, W. Lee Highway.

According to the Virginia State Police, the tragedy unfolded at 7:40 p.m. when a GMC truck pulling a box trailer was travelling along the 2900 block of the highway. Regrettably, the driver was unable to avoid colliding with a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, identified as Worley J. Stafford, aged 66 and hailing from Rural Retreat, Va, was pushing a grocery cart along the road. This particular stretch of Route 11 lacks shoulders or sidewalks, creating a hazardous environment for pedestrians.

Tragically, Mr. Stafford succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident. The driver of the GMC truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was promptly taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The Virginia State Police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The authorities are working diligently to determine the factors that led to this devastating incident.
