BEIJING — Northern and central China have been hit by heavy snowfall, causing widespread disruption to travel and forcing schools to close.
Tragically, one person lost their life on Wednesday due to a roof collapse at a supermarket in Hebei province, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV.
The heavy snowfall has led to delays and cancellations of flights and intercity trains, affecting the daily commute of many Chinese citizens. Severe weather warnings have been issued in several provinces across the country.
To combat the snowfall, tens of thousands of workers armed with brooms and shovels, along with snowplows, have been deployed to the worst-affected regions.
Even the capital city, Beijing, which recently hosted the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, received around 2 inches of snow overnight.
The severe weather conditions originally began in western China over the weekend, with snowstorms and sandstorms causing road closures and leaving drivers stranded, particularly those returning home after celebrating the Lunar New Year holiday.
Neighbouring Mongolia has also been affected by extreme winter weather, with over 650,000 livestock reported killed, according to China’s Xinhua News Agency.
Russian-American dual citizen arrested in Russia on charges of state treason
Russia’s Federal Security Service, the FSB, announced on Tuesday the arrest of a 33-year-old dual citizen of Russia and the United States on suspicion of committing state treason by raising funds for Ukraine.
The detainee, identified as a woman living in Los Angeles, is accused of raising money for a Ukrainian organization that provides weapons and equipment to Ukraine’s military, as stated by the FSB.
Legal group Perviy Otdel revealed that the woman had allegedly sent just over $50 to Razom for Ukraine, a New York-based non-profit that supports the country.
The FSB disclosed that the arrest took place in Yekaterinburg, central Russia, with Russian state news agency RIA Novosti releasing a video purportedly showing the woman being handcuffed and escorted by masked security officers.
If convicted, she could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The detainee has been identified as Ksenia Karelina by Russian news outlet Media Zona, while Perviy Otdel suggests her full name may be Ksenia (Karelina) Khavana, with Karelina possibly being her maiden name.
According to her profile on VK, a Russian social network, she obtained U.S. citizenship in 2021 and studied at the University of Maryland in Baltimore after graduating from Urals Federal University in Yekaterinburg in 2014.
Protester dies during Indian farmer march
SHAMBHU, India — A protester lost their life on Wednesday as thousands of Indian farmers resumed their march towards the capital after unsuccessful negotiations with the government regarding guaranteed crop prices.
Last week, the farmers initiated their protest march but were halted around 125 miles from New Delhi as police resorted to firing tear gas rounds.
The 21-year-old protester, identified as Subhkaran Singh, succumbed to a fatal head injury, as confirmed by medical superintendent H.S. Rekhi at Rajindra Hospital in Punjab state.
Clashes between security forces and farmers erupted in Khanauri, a town in Punjab, leading to Singh’s demise, with two other injured individuals reported to be in a stable condition.
Protest sites along Punjab’s shared borders with Haryana have been established by farmers aiming to reach New Delhi, with the majority hailing from the two states.
Tragic bridge collapse in the Netherlands claims two lives
THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Two individuals lost their lives and two others sustained injuries on Wednesday following a bridge collapse during construction over a canal in eastern Netherlands, as reported by emergency services.
The incident occurred in Lochem, 80 miles east of Amsterdam, when workers were in the process of hoisting a large metal arch into position.
Journalist Nieke Hoitink from regional newspaper De Stentor recounted the harrowing scene, describing how the arch, suspended from a crane, suddenly gave way, resulting in a tragic accident that claimed two construction workers’ lives.
The regional security organization coordinating emergency responses conveyed through a message on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the incident had resulted in two fatalities and two injuries. Investigations into the cause of the collapse are currently underway.
