The San Antonio man accused of a violent rampage in Austin and Bexar County that left six people dead, including his parents, is set to have a pre-trial hearing in Austin on Thursday. The hearing is scheduled to take place in the 147th District Court in Travis County.

Shane James Jr. is facing four counts of capital murder and two counts of aggravated assault against a public servant. He has been held in the Travis County Jail without bond since Dec. 5 after a series of attacks. Despite being in custody, James Jr. has remained silent and has not provided any clues about a motive for the crimes he is accused of committing.

Timeline of the Deadly Rampage

  • 10:41 a.m. — James Jr. allegedly shot an Austin ISD officer in the parking lot of Northeast Early College High School in northeast Austin.

  • 11:59 a.m. — Police received a call for a drive-by shooting on Shadywood Drive where James Jr. is accused of fatally shooting Emmanuel Pop Ba and injuring Sabrina Rahman.

  • 5:47 p.m. — A man was shot while riding his bicycle in the 5700 block of Slaughter Lane.

  • 6:49 p.m. — Officers responded to a burglary in progress on Austral Loop where James Jr. shot at an officer before fleeing in a stolen Acura.

  • 7 p.m. — James Jr. crashed into another motorist after a police pursuit, leading to his arrest. The bodies of Katherine Short and Lauren Short were found inside a home on Austral Loop.

  • 7:45 p.m. — Bexar County Sheriff’s office discovered the bodies of James Jr.’s parents, Phyllis James Jr. and Shane James Sr., at their residence in the Mission Hill community.

Police revealed that James Jr. used a 1911 .45-caliber pistol that he legally purchased in July 2022 in all of the shootings. The weapon was acquired from a private seller who confirmed that James Jr. provided the necessary identification during the purchase.

Investigators have expressed uncertainty about James Jr.’s activities during the approximately six-hour period that remains unaccounted for in the day’s timeline.

As the pre-trial hearing approaches, the community eagerly awaits further developments in this tragic and senseless series of events.
