Accident – Death – Obituary News : The tragic death of 16-year-old Nex Benedict, a nonbinary individual, has sparked widespread criticism of Oklahoma legislation that is seen as targeting the LGBTQ+ community. Nex, who used they/them pronouns, passed away following a physical altercation in a high school bathroom in a small town near Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Owasso Police Department (OPD) stated that while the cause of Nex’s death has not been officially determined, it is not believed to be related to trauma.

Nex’s mother, Sue Benedict, revealed in an interview with British news outlet The Independent that Nex had been a victim of bullying at Owasso High School for over a year. The bullying reportedly escalated after Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed a bill requiring students in public schools to use bathrooms that align with the gender on their birth certificates.

According to Sue Benedict, the situation turned violent on February 7 when Nex sustained head injuries during a confrontation at Owasso High School. The OPD confirmed that they are investigating the incident. Nex was found with bruises on their face and eyes, as well as scratches on the back of their head when their mother arrived at the school.

Following the altercation, Nex collapsed in the living room the next day and was rushed to the St. Francis Pediatric Emergency Room, where they later passed away. The OPD stated that preliminary information from the medical examiner’s office indicated that Nex did not die as a result of trauma, but the official cause of death is pending further testing and a toxicology report.

The news of Nex’s death has sparked outrage on social media, with many attributing the tragedy to Oklahoma’s transgender bathroom ban. U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren condemned the incident, emphasizing the need for justice and safety for all students. The Human Rights Campaign criticized the legislation, stating that it contributes to the discrimination and danger faced by transgender and nonbinary youth.

In the midst of the public outcry, questions have been raised about the school district’s handling of the altercation and Nex’s subsequent death. Critics have called out the district for not reporting the fight to the police or requesting medical assistance. The school district defended its actions, stating that it followed protocol by notifying parents, conducting health assessments, and intervening to stop the altercation.

As the investigation into Nex’s death continues, the community mourns the loss of a young life and demands accountability for the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. It serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and the importance of creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students..
