Authorities in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, have taken a cleric into custody and are actively searching for his brother in connection with the horrific gang-rape of an eight-year-old child, officials have confirmed.
The disturbing incident came to light after the minor’s father lodged a complaint at Malihabad police station, alleging that his daughter had been sexually assaulted by two men who were instructors at a local madrasa, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vishwajeet Srivastav revealed.
The suspects have been identified as Mohammed Abedin and his brother, Mohammad Arshad, according to officials familiar with the case.
In response to the complaint, authorities have filed a First Information Report (FIR) under section 376D (gang rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against the accused.
DCP Srivastava disclosed that Abedin and the victim’s mother were apprehended on Wednesday under section 34 (common intention) of the IPC. “Our teams are actively pursuing Arshad, who is currently on the run,” the officer added.
It has been revealed that the victim’s father works in a Gulf country and had been away from India for the past eight months, as per official reports.
Srivastava further explained that following the father’s departure, the victim’s mother entered into a relationship with Abedin. Shockingly, the woman was aware of the heinous crime committed by the two suspects against her own daughter, he elaborated.
Upon the father’s return and subsequent discovery of his daughter’s ordeal, he wasted no time in seeking justice by approaching the authorities, officials confirmed. The investigation is ongoing, with a primary focus on locating and apprehending the absconding suspect, Mohammad Arshad.
