Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The mother of a 21-year-old man who was tragically killed in Hamas’s attack on Israel has accused a United Nations worker of taking her son’s body to Gaza. Yonatan Samerano managed to escape the militants’ violent assault at the Nova music festival in the Negev desert, only to meet his untimely end at nearby kibbutz Beeri.

According to the Israeli government, a man captured on video dragging Samerano’s body into a white jeep was identified as a social worker for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA). This revelation has sparked widespread outrage and led to several countries suspending funding to the agency, prompting two separate investigations.

Mother’s Plea for Justice

During a press conference in Tel Aviv, Samerano’s mother, Ayelet, made an emotional plea for the return of her son’s body. She questioned the integrity of an organisation that purports to promote goodness but employs individuals capable of such inhumane acts.

She specifically called out the UN for compensating the man responsible for dragging her son’s body, treating him as if he were a mere trophy to be paraded in Gaza.

Allegations Against UNRWA Staff

Israel recently provided more details regarding the alleged involvement of UNRWA staff members in the Hamas attack. The individual identified in the video, 45-year-old Faisal Ali Mussalem al-Naami, was described as a UNRWA social worker but was believed to also be a member of Hamas’s commando unit.

According to the government, al-Naami played a key role in the kidnapping of a soldier from Beeri and coordinated the transportation of weapons and vehicles for Hamas. Other accused individuals were said to be teachers or staff members at UNRWA-operated schools and healthcare facilities.

Calls for Transparency

Shelly Aviv Yeini, head of the legal team at the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, emphasised the need for a thorough and transparent investigation into these allegations. The group seeks assurances that the UN’s core principle of neutrality is not just upheld but actively safeguarded.

UNRWA operates across Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon, providing educational and healthcare services to Palestinians and employing around 30,000 staff members. The agency took swift action to dismiss all individuals implicated in the attack to protect its reputation.

Ongoing Investigations

Two separate investigations are currently underway to probe the collaboration allegations and assess UNRWA’s broader political neutrality. These reports are expected to be released in the coming weeks.

Recent developments have further strained relations between Israel and UNRWA, with Israel claiming the discovery of Hamas tunnels directly beneath the agency’s Gaza City headquarters. As a result, UNRWA was forced to evacuate the premises due to escalating hostilities in the region.
