The Colorado Bureau of Investigation made the announcement in a recent news release, revealing that the remains were found on Wolf Creek Pass in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado back in 1991.
Working in collaboration with the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office, which has jurisdiction over Wolf Creek Pass, the Colorado investigative bureau was able to crack the cold case. Through the use of genetic genealogy, dental records, and other investigative tools, Risku’s remains were positively identified.
The circumstances surrounding Risku’s death remain a mystery, with authorities yet to determine if foul play was involved. Wolf Creek Pass is infamous for its treacherous conditions, with the Colorado Department of Transportation reporting numerous deadly vehicle crashes in recent years.
According to Risku’s family, he occasionally travelled to California from Indiana during his lifetime. However, the reasons for his presence in the Colorado mountains remain unknown. Family members described Risku as an adventurous individual who enjoyed outdoor activities.
Mineral County Sheriff Terry Wetherill expressed relief at the identification of Mr. Risku, stating, “The identification of Mr. Risku is a tremendous first step in helping provide his family with answers.” He urged anyone with information about Risku’s presence on Wolf Creek Pass to come forward and contact the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office.
