A tragic incident occurred at Owasso High School in Oklahoma, where a 16-year-old student lost their life following a fight. As the investigation into the cause of death continues, advocates are pointing to a heightened and hostile climate against the LGBTQ+ community.

Nex Benedict, who identified as nonbinary, tragically passed away on February 8, one day after being involved in a fight with a transgender student and others at the school. The police in Owasso are currently conducting an investigation into the matter.

Sue Benedict, Nex’s guardian and biological grandmother, revealed to The Independent that Nex was severely beaten during the altercation with three older girls in a school bathroom, resulting in a fatal head injury. It was mentioned that Nex had been facing bullying at the school, although the extent of it was not fully known to the family.

According to Owasso police, the student was rushed back to the hospital the day after the incident and was pronounced dead. The police department stated that they will not release further information until the medical examiner’s office determines the cause of death.

Allegations of Bullying Surface

Text messages shared by a family member revealed that Nex had been bullied shortly before the tragic incident. The messages indicated that Nex had been physically attacked by three individuals at school, leading to a visit to the emergency room.

Nex detailed in the messages that the girls involved in the altercation had been bullying them and their friends, prompting Nex to take a stand. The exchange also mentioned bruises from the fight and concerns about a possible concussion due to dizziness and nausea.

Details surrounding the alleged bullying remain unclear, highlighting the challenges faced by individuals in the LGBTQ+ community.

The passing of Nex comes at a time when advocates have been vocal about the hostile environment faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Oklahoma. Recent legislative actions, including the passing of a controversial “bathroom bill,” have raised concerns about discrimination and safety for LGBTQ+ residents.

Owasso Public Schools acknowledged the incident, stating that a physical altercation occurred in a restroom and was intervened by students and staff. The district mentioned that no ambulance was called, but recommended a medical examination for one student involved.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters expressed his condolences for the loss and pledged to provide support to the school district during this difficult time. Calls for a thorough investigation into the matter have been made by advocacy groups.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Nex’s family during this challenging period.

CNN’s Taylor Romine and Caroll Alvarado contributed to this report.
