Authorities in Pattaya have apprehended a suspect in connection with the attempted rape and robbery of a Chinese tourist near a roadside forest beside Siam Country Club in Pattaya City, Chonburi province. The incident occurred on the night of Feb 18, when the 29-year-old Chinese woman, identified as Meilin, raised the alarm at Nong Prue station, reporting that she had been attacked and robbed by a Thai man.
According to Meilin, she and her brother had been waiting for public transport on Sattahip-Nakhon Ratchasima Road when two Thai men offered them a ride to the South Pattaya area on separate motorcycles. However, the man on whose motorbike Meilin was riding veered off course, forcibly removed her from the vehicle, and attempted to sexually assault her.
After his failed rape attempt, the assailant proceeded to tie Meilin’s hands and legs, confiscate 15,000 baht and 15,000 Chinese yuan from her possession, and set fire to the surrounding grass to eliminate any evidence of the crime before making his escape.
Following a thorough investigation, police were able to trace the motorcycle used in the incident to a residence in Rayong province and subsequently arrested Thip Phasiri, a 41-year-old Thai man. Meilin positively identified Thip as her attacker from a photograph lineup.
Law enforcement officials revealed that Thip Phasiri may have been involved in a separate robbery case in the same vicinity, with the victim in that instance being a caddy at a nearby golf course. The caddy recounted being targeted by a man who snatched her purse and caused her motorcycle to crash by kicking it while travelling along the Sattahip-Nakhon Ratchasima Road.
The suspect is currently in custody and facing charges for his alleged crimes, as authorities continue to investigate the full extent of his involvement in criminal activities in the area.
