In a brazen early morning theft, three men from New York were apprehended by Hamilton Township police for stealing catalytic converters. The incident took place on Monday, February 19, 2024, at around 5:58 a.m. when officers responded to reports of a theft in progress on Locust Avenue West. Simultaneously, another theft was reported in the 3400 block of South Broad Street.
Upon arrival, officers noticed a dark-colored sedan speeding away from the scene at Barclay Apartments. Despite attempting to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated away at a high speed. The pursuit was called off, but officers later came across a collision between two vehicles at the intersection of Hempstead Road and Arena Drive. One individual fled the scene on foot towards Marcia Drive, leading officers on a foot chase that resulted in the arrest of Joel Rodriguez, 31, from the Bronx, NY.
Meanwhile, another suspect, Rafael Medina, 31, also from the Bronx, was found hiding behind a shed in a nearby yard. The third suspect, Renee Gutierrez, 30, from Brooklyn, NY, was located inside the suspect vehicle along with approximately twenty stolen catalytic converters and a floor jack.
Both Rodriguez and Medina were taken to Capital Health at Fuld for treatment of their injuries before being released. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash was unharmed. All three suspects were charged with multiple offenses, including theft, criminal mischief, possession of burglars tools, and receiving stolen property. Additionally, Medina and Rodriguez faced charges of obstructing the administration of law and resisting arrest. They are currently being held at the Mercer County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing.
