CHICAGO — A group of men have been charged in connection with a violent robbery that took place on a CTA train in Chicago on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred on a Pink Line train in the 2000 block of South Kostner Avenue, where a 49-year-old man was beaten and robbed.
The Chicago police have identified the suspects as Fernando Loyo-Rodriguez, Wilker Gutierrez Sierra, Carlos Carreno-Carreno, and Yonnier Guasamucare Garcia. Each of them is facing one felony count of robbery and one felony count of aggravated battery by strangulation.
The robbery took place around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, and the suspects were apprehended less than 45 minutes after the incident. The victim lost consciousness during the robbery but has since recovered.
During a court appearance, it was revealed that the four suspects are Venezuelan migrants residing in the Loop area. They are currently staying in area shelters. Three of the men were already facing misdemeanor retail theft charges prior to this incident.
The state’s attorney has requested the judge to deny pre-trial release for the suspects, citing that the robbery was an organized and premeditated crime. Three of the men will remain in custody until their trial.
Immigration experts have mentioned that if convicted on both felony charges, three of the suspects could face deportation.
