PHOENIX – An Arizona man is facing multiple felony charges following a disturbing sexual assault incident.
According to court records, the harrowing incident took place in Tempe on the morning of Feb. 13.
Here is a detailed account of what transpired.
Who is the suspect?
The suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Edward Cordell Brown, as per court documents.
What unfolded during the incident?
Authorities narrate that around 6:30 a.m., the victim, referred to as ‘Victim 1’ in legal papers, encountered Brown at a carport as she was leaving her residence in Phoenix.
“Brown brandished a handgun at Victim 1, coercing her into her home and into her bedroom against her will,” investigators detailed. Victim 1 and Brown were not acquainted.
A bystander witnessed the incident and promptly alerted the police from inside the property.
“Once inside the bedroom, Brown forcibly stripped the victim and demanded money from her,” detectives revealed, adding that Brown allegedly sexually assaulted the victim. Court documents contained explicit descriptions of the assault.
One of the attending officers reportedly witnessed the suspect sexually assaulting Victim 1 through the bedroom window. Despite commands from the officers for Brown to exit the premises, he refused.
“Brown fled the bedroom where the assault occurred and entered another room. He then opened a window and discharged the firearm several times towards Officer Victim 3 and Officer Victim 4. Officer Victim 3 retaliated by firing at Brown,” a section of the court documents stated.
Subsequently, detectives mentioned that the suspect escaped through a window and ran north towards an alley. Another officer discharged his weapon, leading to Brown’s apprehension. He was later taken to a hospital for treatment.

- Five counts of Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon.
- Two counts of Kidnapping
- One count of 1st Degree Burglary
- One count of Armed Robbery
- Three counts of Sexual Assault
- One count of Possession of a Weapon by a Prohibited Person
- One count of Discharging a Firearm at a Residence
A judge has decreed that Brown is not eligible for bail. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Feb. 26.
