Authorities in Texas have formally charged 42-year-old Don Steven McDougal with the murder of 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham, who tragically went missing in Texas just last week, as reported by CNN.

The heart-wrenching case unfolded when Cunningham was reported missing on February 15 after her school noted her absence that fateful morning, according to a press release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Department. Tragically, her lifeless body was found in the Trinity River approximately 10 miles away from her residence on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.

McDougal had already been flagged as a person of interest in Cunningham’s disappearance, as detailed in a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety. His arrest on an unrelated assault charge occurred on Friday, and he has since remained in police custody.

Initial investigations by the Polk County Sheriff’s Department revealed that Cunningham had been expected to take the school bus on the day she went missing but was conspicuously absent from her usual neighbourhood stop. Following the school’s report of her disappearance, law enforcement promptly issued an Amber Alert and initiated a thorough search for the young girl.

Speaking to local news outlet KPRC shortly after her daughter’s disappearance, Cunningham’s mother, Cassie Matthews, expressed her anguish. “She has so many people that love her and adore her,” Matthews lamented. “She has so many opportunities ahead of her, and she deserves every right to be able to reach those opportunities.”

Cunningham had been residing with her father and grandparents. According to The Associated Press, McDougal was a family friend residing on the property who occasionally assisted in taking Cunningham to the bus stop or driving her to school.

McDougal’s criminal history dates back over a decade, with multiple convictions including two counts of child enticement. The revelation of McDougal as a person of interest in Cunningham’s case was made official on February 17 by authorities.

During a press briefing, Polk County Sheriff Byron Lyons shared how crucial cellphone data and video evidence were in pinpointing locations to search for Cunningham, ultimately leading investigators to lower water levels along the Trinity River.

Although the exact cause of Cunningham’s untimely demise has not yet been disclosed, Sheriff Lyons confirmed that the authorities are treating her death as a homicide. McDougal is currently held in police custody awaiting his first court appearance.
