A man from Hilo who was discovered floating in Hilo Harbor on February 9th most likely died as a result of drowning, according to autopsy results. The body of the man, identified as 73-year-old Dennis William Swain, was found face-down at the edge of the Hilo Pier and pulled from the water by responding personnel.

Discovery and Response

Shortly after 8:00 a.m. on February 9, Hilo patrol officers and Hawai‘i Fire Department personnel responded to a report of a male body floating at the Hilo Pier. Swain was transported to the Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:47 a.m.

Autopsy Results

An autopsy performed on Swain indicated that his death was likely the result of drowning. However, the pathologist’s final ruling is pending standard toxicology results. There was no evidence of foul play in relation to Swain’s death.
