Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A Statesboro resident who was wanted in connection with a homicide that occurred in November 2023 has been identified as the victim of a fatal shooting during a drug deal on February 12.

The individual, identified as 19-year-old Anthony Jermail Johnson, was the subject of an active search by law enforcement for his alleged involvement in the killing of Antawan Strickland last year. Following a shooting incident on February 12 that resulted in one fatality and two injuries, investigators confirmed that Johnson was the deceased individual in question.

Prior to his death, Johnson had managed to evade capture and had fled the Statesboro area. However, he eventually returned to the city where he met with tragic consequences. Authorities believe that Johnson may have received assistance from accomplices while on the run, and efforts to identify and apprehend these individuals are ongoing.

Details of the Shooting Incident

On the day of his death, Johnson was reportedly involved in a drug transaction with three individuals at The Vault Apartments on Statesboro Place Circle. The group then travelled to the Cambridge the Pines apartment complex on Lanier Drive where the exchange took place.

During the course of the transaction, a dispute arose between Johnson and the others, leading to Johnson brandishing a firearm. In a violent turn of events, Johnson opened fire on the occupants of the car, injuring two of them. In self-defence, the men in the vehicle returned fire, resulting in Johnson sustaining fatal injuries.

The injured individuals sought medical attention at East Georgia Regional Medical Center for their non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and were subsequently discharged. Witnesses within the apartment complex cooperated with investigators, providing valuable information regarding the incident.

Legal Implications

With Johnson’s death, the homicide case involving Antawan Strickland has been officially closed, bringing a sense of closure to the victim’s family. Authorities have determined that the force used against Johnson was justified under the circumstances, as he was in the process of committing an aggravated assault against the other individuals involved.

While no charges are expected in relation to Johnson’s demise, additional charges related to the drug activity and other events uncovered during the investigation are likely to follow. Individuals with pertinent information are encouraged to contact Senior Detective Dustin Cross at (912) 764-9911 or submit an anonymous tip online.
