State police in Luzerne County have made a significant breakthrough in a cold case that has remained unsolved for three decades. The skeletal remains of a woman discovered in Sugarloaf Township in December 1994 have finally been identified.

After years of relentless investigation, authorities have confirmed the identity of the woman as Margaret Carol Wininger, born on September 5, 1948. Wininger, who attended West Hazelton High School from 1965-1966, went missing in the early 1990s while living with her family in Northeast Philadelphia.

The breakthrough in the case came through recent advancements in DNA technology and forensic genealogy. Investigators were able to locate a possible relative of the unidentified woman, leading to the positive identification of Wininger.

Despite the identification, the cause and manner of Wininger’s death remains unknown due to the condition of the remains. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are seeking information from anyone who may have had contact with Wininger during her return to the area in the early 1990s.
