JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — A man has been taken into custody in connection with a homicide investigation after a toddler tragically died at UAB Medical Center over the weekend.

On Friday evening, deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) responded to a distress call at the emergency room of UAB Medical Center West. They were informed that a child, later identified as 19-month-old Gabriel Alonso, had been brought in with severe bodily injuries. Sadly, the toddler was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Following the incident, JCSO detectives and investigators from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office were summoned to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation. The findings from the examination indicated that the circumstances surrounding the child’s death warranted further investigation as a homicide.

Subsequently, 27-year-old Oscar Espinoza Guadarrama, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, was apprehended in connection with the case. Guadarrama is currently being detained at the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer without the possibility of posting bond.

The evidence collected during the investigation will be presented to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office in Bessemer. The district attorney’s office will determine the appropriate charges to be filed against Guadarrama in relation to the tragic death of young Gabriel Alonso.
