MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The individual implicated in a recent kidnapping incident in Southaven, Mississippi, has been identified as Elmer Smith, aged 37.

Smith is facing multiple charges, including kidnapping, domestic violence, evading arrest, evading arrest in a vehicle, disregarding a red light, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, and reckless endangerment.

On February 15 around 1:15 p.m., the MMS Task Force received information that the suspect, Smith, was in the vicinity of East Parkway and Barton Street.

Reports indicate that Smith was operating a black 2023 Toyota 4Runner with a victim held against their will inside the vehicle.

It was revealed that Smith had an active warrant from Southaven, Mississippi, along with domestic violence assault warrants issued in Shelby County, Tennessee.

Law enforcement officers located the vehicle downtown and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Smith, however, refused to comply, prompting a police pursuit.

During the ensuing chase, Smith exhibited highly erratic driving behavior, including driving into oncoming traffic, veering off the road, weaving through multiple lanes, and running several red lights.

The pursuit came to a dramatic end when the vehicle crashed into a fence in Whitehaven at the intersection of Shelby Drive and Elvis Presley Boulevard.

Smith exited the car and attempted to flee on foot, heading eastbound on Shelby Drive. He was apprehended after a brief foot chase.

The victim, who was found in the passenger seat of Smith’s vehicle, sustained minor facial scratches. Although she declined medical treatment, Smith was transported to Regional One Hospital in a stable condition.

Elmer Smith is due to appear in court next on Tuesday morning.
