A man was taken into custody on Saturday afternoon for reportedly attacking an elderly man because of his religious beliefs in Broward County. Lauderhill Police confirmed in a press release on Sunday that Trevor Rodney had been apprehended and charged with battery of a person aged 65 or older, as well as committing a third-degree felony with evidence of prejudice.
Law enforcement officers responded to a battery incident in the vicinity of 6900 Northwest 44th Street around 1:30 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, the victim was found with multiple injuries, including bruised eyes, minor abrasions on the face, and intense body pain. The victim recounted that he had been assaulted by an unknown individual without any provocation while walking along the 6400 block of the street.
The victim disclosed to authorities that the attacker, later identified as Rodney, had hurled a racial slur at him during the assault. A passerby who witnessed the attack intervened by shouting at Rodney to cease the violence. Subsequently, Rodney walked away from the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward. He is currently in custody at the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail.
According to Lauderhill Police, the victim, aged over 65, was dressed in attire that was traditional to his faith. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. While the assault took place near a synagogue as per Google Maps, CBS News Miami has not verified whether the victim was affiliated with the Jewish faith or the specific synagogue in question.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that this unusual incident does not align with the typical service calls in this community,” Lauderhill Police remarked. “In response to this event, it is emphasised that we are dedicated to fostering a community that supports and enhances the quality of life, where individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds can coexist harmoniously.”
