Bhubaneswar: Authorities in Bhubaneswar have uncovered the shocking motive behind the recent kidnapping of a newborn baby boy from the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital. It has been revealed that the main suspect, Sarat Puta, orchestrated the abduction in order to obtain a baby boy for himself.
Details of the Kidnapping
The incident occurred on Friday morning when Puta, whose own newborn baby girl was being treated at the SNCU, left his daughter in the hospital and absconded with the baby boy. He was assisted in the kidnapping by his wife and sister. The baby boy, who also had a low birth weight like Puta’s daughter, was taken by the suspects under the guise of being family members.
After a six-hour search, the police team from Balangir managed to intercept the kidnappers at Boudh district’s Kacherimal and rescue the infant. The baby boy was safely returned to his original parents after thorough verification.
Investigation and Internal Probe
Sub-divisional police officer (Balangir) Pradip Sahu stated that the interrogation of Sarat Puta confirmed his intention to kidnap the baby boy to fulfil his desire of having a son. Puta’s sister, Sushila, played a key role in the abduction by posing as a family member of the baby boy.
The hospital authorities have initiated an internal probe to determine if any staff members were involved in the kidnapping. According to hospital sources, confusion arose due to the similarity in names between the infant boy’s father, Sushil Swain, and Puta’s sister, Sushila, leading to the mistaken handover of the baby.
Security Measures and CCTV Footage
The hospital has provided police with CCTV footage showing the suspects leaving the premises with the baby boy, posing as his family members. The footage revealed that the mother was in a separate ward while the baby was in the SNCU. A man claiming to be a family member arrived and took the baby, alleging that the doctors had advised him to bring the baby to his mother for breastfeeding.
Authorities are now working to enhance security measures at the hospital to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The swift action taken by the police in rescuing the kidnapped baby boy has been commended, and efforts are being made to ensure the safety and security of all patients at the medical facility.
