Two siblings from Riverside County have admitted to defrauding the U.S. Postal Service of over $2.3 million in a sophisticated mail scam. Anwer Fareed Alam, aged 35, and Yousofzay Fahim Alam, aged 31, were identified as the perpetrators of this elaborate scheme, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The elaborate scheme
Authorities revealed that the brothers executed their fraudulent activities between October 2016 and May 2019. The duo purchased packages and postage from the USPS, selecting the option for $100 in insurance for potential lost or damaged parcel contents.
Anwer would carefully wrap packages, either leaving them empty or filling them with low-value items, before dispatching them via priority mail to fictitious recipients at fake addresses. Subsequently, Yousofzay would file false insurance claims through the USPS website, asserting that the packages he sent had been lost or damaged during transit. He exaggerated the value of the purported contents, accompanied by fabricated invoices and images of items that were never actually in the parcels.
A web of deception
To conceal the magnitude of their fraudulent activities, the brothers adopted aliases and fictitious business names. They received checks from the USPS to cover the alleged losses up to $100, as well as the shipping costs. This intricate web of deceit enabled them to unlawfully obtain a staggering $2,367,033, as per the prosecution’s findings.
Concealing the proceeds
The ill-gotten gains were dispersed to various addresses in Temecula, including their residential addresses, business premises, and approximately 15 different post office boxes across two distinct locations. The brothers then proceeded to deposit the USPS checks into their bank accounts, attempting to obscure the origins of the illicit funds.
Legal consequences
Both siblings have pleaded guilty to a single count of mail fraud. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for November 1, where they could potentially face a maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars if convicted.
