A man from South Jersey was apprehended on Sunday following a violent attempted carjacking incident on Route 30 in Absecon, Atlantic County.
The alarming incident unfolded just after 8:30 a.m. when law enforcement officers rushed to Route 30 (Absecon Boulevard) in response to a carjacking report.
According to officials, the suspect involved in the altercation has been identified as Deshaun Washington, a 31-year-old resident of Mays Landing.
Reports indicate that Washington intentionally walked into the path of oncoming traffic on foot, causing disruption on the road.
The victim, a motorist travelling along Rt. 30, was forced to come to a halt to avoid colliding with Washington.
Washington then aggressively approached the vehicle, pounding on the bonnet in an attempt to gain entry, as per police statements.
Despite the victim’s doors being securely locked, Washington proceeded to repeatedly strike the car’s window in a bid to gain access.
In a desperate bid to flee the scene, the victim accelerated away. However, Washington allegedly started hurling rocks at the vehicle during the getaway, resulting in a shattered tail light and damage to the car.
Upon arrival at the scene, Washington fled into the nearby woods close to a hotel, prompting officers to initiate a search operation.
Shortly after, he was located and apprehended without any resistance.
Washington now faces a slew of charges, including first-degree carjacking, weapons-related offenses, and criminal mischief.
