Mowbray is urging residents of Maryland to prioritize fire safety following two tragic incidents that occurred within hours of each other in the state. The fires resulted in the loss of lives and underscore the importance of having working smoke alarms and an escape plan in place.
The first incident took place in Wicomico County, where the Hebron Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported dwelling fire at 26357 Quantico Creek Road. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a woman trapped inside the home. Despite efforts to rescue her, the victim, identified as 58-year-old Amy Appleby-Harris, succumbed to her injuries later that day. Deputy State Fire Marshals determined that the fire originated in the second-floor master bedroom and was caused by smoking. Although the home had functioning smoke detectors, the occupants’ pre-existing medical conditions hindered their ability to escape.
This tragic event marked the second fatal fire investigated by the Office of the State Fire Marshal within a 12-hour period. So far this year, two confirmed fatal fires have been recorded, with four more pending confirmation from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray emphasized the need for vigilance, stating, “Each year, heating and smoking-related fires are leading causes of Marylanders tragically losing their lives. You only have minutes from the sound of the first smoke alarm to escape a fire. Please, make sure you check your smoke alarms today. The sooner you hear an alarm, the sooner you can get out. Have an escape plan, and once you get out, stay out. It can be a matter of life or death for you and your loved ones.”
