A homeless man from Kansas City was taken into custody by Lawrence Police after allegedly starting a fire in an apartment following a break-in.

The incident took place on Friday, Feb. 16, at an apartment complex near Sandra Shaw Park on W. 2nd St. Authorities were alerted to a burglary at around 5:30 p.m.

According to the victim, the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Trong D. Turner from Kansas City, Missouri, entered the apartment through a window and proceeded to vandalise the property.

Upon arrival, emergency responders attempted to persuade Turner to vacate the premises, which he eventually did. However, as they were apprehending him, smoke and flames were observed emanating from the apartment.

The apartment complex was swiftly evacuated, and fortunately, no injuries were reported. Turner was promptly taken into custody and booked into Douglas County Jail on charges of aggravated arson and burglary.

Court records indicate that Turner is also facing charges in a separate case involving four counts of criminal damage to property stemming from a vandalism incident on Dec. 31. A status conference for this case has been scheduled for March 13.

Turner, whose listed address is the Faith Hope Homeless Camp in Kansas City, remains in custody with no bond set at this time.
