PONTIAN, Feb 17 — A 38-year-old woman had a narrow escape from a fire that engulfed her flat unit in Taman Pontian Utama early this morning. The victim, identified as Nor Khalifah Mohd Wazir, sustained a hand injury and was treated by Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) paramedics at the scene.
Pontian Baru fire and rescue station chief Assistant Fire Superintendent Mahadir Mamat stated that firemen responded promptly to a distress call received at 12.53am. The victim was trapped on the first floor of the building, struggling to reach the exit stairwell due to the intense flames.
Upon arrival, the firemen located the victim and devised a plan to rescue her. They removed the back windows of the first floor as an emergency exit, enabling the victim to climb to safety. The entire operation was successfully completed by 2.54am, with the assistance of 15 firemen, a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), an EMRS team, and a tanker.
In addition to Nor Khalifah, five other individuals, including three migrant workers from Nepal, managed to escape from the fire on their own. They were located on the fourth floor of the building and made it to safety without any major injuries.
Assistant Fire Superintendent Mahadir Mamat revealed that the fire had started in the Tenaga Nasional Berhad electricity meter room on the ground floor of the flat. While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, it resulted in the destruction of four motorcycles – a Yamaha Ego, Honda RS, Honda Wave 100, and Yamaha LC.
