Accident – Death – Obituary News : A 40-year-old woman from Assam’s Karimganj district has been taken into custody for allegedly assaulting her 65-year-old mother-in-law to death following a heated argument. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, saw the accused, identified as Afsana Begum, allegedly using a wooden object to attack her mother-in-law, Joytun Nessa, after a dispute erupted between the two over the former’s treatment of her children. The family members reported the incident to the police, who subsequently arrested Begum on Thursday.
According to reports, Nessa was rushed to a nearby hospital by her son, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries the following day. The family members revealed that Begum was reportedly upset with her children for refusing to attend prayers at the mosque. When she began disciplining them with a stick, Nessa intervened, leading to a confrontation between the two women. The argument escalated, resulting in Begum assaulting Nessa with a piece of wood, causing her to lose consciousness.
After the incident, Begum fled the scene, prompting her husband to file a First Information Report (FIR) at the Patharkandi police station. Subsequently, the police launched a search operation and apprehended Begum from a nearby residence. She has been charged under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant sections. Begum was presented before the court on Friday evening for further legal proceedings.
The police have sent Nessa’s body to Karimganj Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Additionally, statements from Begum’s children and husband have been recorded as part of the ongoing investigation. An officer stated, “We are continuing to investigate the matter and are currently questioning Afsana for more information.”
