According to an official news release, the collision involved two vehicles on US 385, approximately 9 miles north of Dimmitt. The vehicles involved were a 2021 GMC Sierra, heading northbound, and a 2016 Ford F450 pickup, traveling southbound. Both vehicles were towing trailers at the time of the accident.
The incident took place around 1:45 p.m. when, for reasons unknown, the Ford pickup veered into the northbound lane, resulting in a side-swipe collision with the GMC pickup.

The impact of the collision caused the GMC pickup and its trailer to jackknife, coming to a rest in the northbound lane. Meanwhile, the Ford pickup and its trailer ended up in the ditch on the western side of the road.
Driver Information
The driver of the GMC pickup has been identified as 45-year-old Tranquilino Garza from Hereford. Fortunately, Garza escaped the incident without any injuries.
Tragically, the driver of the Ford pickup has been identified as 61-year-old Russell Smallwood from Lubbock. Smallwood was pronounced dead at the scene, adding to the gravity of this unfortunate event.
