CHICAGO (CBS) — A tragic incident occurred this week when a mother and her adult daughter were run over by a reckless driver after leaving a Drake concert in St. Louis. The devastating incident has left their family in grief and seeking assistance.
According to reports from CBS affiliate KMOV 4, the accident took place around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of 18th and Olive Streets in St. Louis. A speeding 2020 Jeep Cherokee ran a red light, colliding with the front of a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander, before striking the two women who were crossing in the crosswalk.
The victims have been identified as Laticha Bracero, 42, and her daughter Alyssa Cordova, 21. Neighbors of the family expressed their shock and sorrow, emphasizing the close bond between the mother and daughter.
“They were both super fun-loving, energetic, just full of life, and wanting to make memories and just have fun,” said Bracero’s cousin, Nicole Rivera.
Marlena McLaurin, a neighbor who had known the mother-daughter duo for 15 years, described them as genuinely good people. She reminisced about their shared moments, such as enjoying fireworks on their porch during summertime and exchanging food.
The victims’ relationship was also highlighted in a GoFundMe campaign organized by their family members. Bracero worked as a supervisor at a local Wintrust bank branch, while Cordova, her only child, was attending college and working at a Starbucks Coffee.
The tragic incident also resulted in injuries to four other individuals, including the driver of the Jeep, 22-year-old Monte Henderson. Fortunately, they are expected to recover.
Tragically, Bracero lost her life at the scene of the accident, while Cordova was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries. Their family and friends are devastated by the loss and remember them as more than just victims of a tragic accident.
“They’re our family, and we love them, and we’re going to miss them – and they’re not just two people who died, you know, trying to cross the street,” expressed Rivera.
Efforts are underway to raise funds to bring the mother and daughter back home. Meanwhile, the driver, Monte Henderson, is facing multiple charges, including two counts of involuntary manslaughter.
